Costs of raising a litter are expensive. At first we used to just give the puppy money to the dam owner minus basic expenses, but that ended up being too expensive for us. Here is a basic breakdown of costs.
Female Costs Cost of a co-own puppy varies from $0-2500. Depending on the line, some females cost us more than that to produce. A couple of our girls were closer to $10,000 to produce. Litter size makes a huge difference here, as selling the other puppies helps offset cost of a litter.
Health Tests Rads cost $200-1000 depending on what all we are certifying (hips, elbows, shoulder, spine).
OFA fees- These start at $110, can easily hit $250 for a well tested dog and can get as high as $500.
Optimal Selection-$70-180/dog
Gensol $40/test, usually only 2 tests/breeding dog and 2 tests/puppy in litter.
OFA Thyroid-$200-600/dog
Brucellosis testing-
CAER testing-
BAER OFA-
Genetics to OFA- I haven't started paying OFA to register our genetics since we have the website people can refer to, but a lot of breeders do now to verify clear through parentage and to get a CHIC#.
Progesterone Testing
AI costs-We usually do vaginal AI, but have done surgical with fresh chilled or frozen semen.
Boarding costs
Stud Stud fee-this will vary between $1000-$5000 pending the stud Travel costs can vary a ton for studs and can be well into the thousands pending housing, travel...
Vet Costs X-Rays-We only do these if necessary but they run about
Brucellosis-
C Sections-
Dewormers-This varies per litter-lineage of female, number and size of pups.
Puppy evals-This includes their DPC, Microchips, and BAER testing.
Puppies past 10 weeks-Every 3-4 weeks they get another round of vaccines, heartgard, and frontline/nexgard, +/- fecal. This starts at $40 my cost and can hit $200 when we add in the Lepto, Lyme, and Rabies vaccines.
Misc-We do occasionally need extra fecals, meds, prescription foods for sick puppies. We have had one puppy with a UTI. We have had a few hernias and missed rear dew claws that we have done surgery on at 6 weeks so they were healed for their new homes. We have had one puppy with a broken leg as well-rads, splinting, and meds add up. We had one puppy that started not doing well around 3-4 weeks that progressed and we lost after a couple weeks of hospitalization. We have had 3 cases of mastitis. We have had 2 cases of hypocalcemia in moms.
Litter Costs Food- This can be as little as 1 extra bag for our toys and up to 50 bags for some litter. Litter size, metabolism of dam, and when the puppies go home. We have had some puppies stay as long as 6 months before finding their forever homes.
Toys
Dewormers/meds-We use a variety of pyrantel, panacur, albon, and occasionally toltrazuril. Do not buy these from Amazon. Either get them from us, your vet, or a reliable source.
Heat/Air-Costs to heat or cool the palace can get very high depending on the season.
Pressure washer/water-I go through pressure washers way too fast but we suck at taking care of them. I need them for pressure washing the vet fleece and pens.
Washer/dryer- The laundry really adds up for litters and dogs. Unfortunately, we go through washing machines fast.
Neonatal supplies-formula, tubes, clamps, fluids, heaters, heat lamps, fans, cameras and subscription, play pens, whelping boxes, vet fleece, supplements...
Go Home Bags Most of our go home bags cost less that $20 to put together and sometimes under $10 if I get some used stuff.
Guarantee We guarantee all of our puppies for any genetic health problems but also cover other things that pop up. We refund up to the price of the puppy in most cases (three times for our program-pat lux, hips, and shoulder OCD), but also refunded 2.5 x the cost of a puppy that needed expensive heart surgery.
Returns also get extremely expensive. We do try to charge enough for our rehomes to cover the costs of catching up their vet work, but that rarely happens. Many need fixed, vx, and supplies.
Advertising Website name- Weebly-Weebly alone for our website is $480/yr. This is most of our traffic. Facebook-Free for now, but I should probably run a few ads. Using ads can make it less likely your page gets taken down. We have been pretty lucky so far so I haven't bothered. Puppyfind-$20/month plus $1 a day to boost. We used to get a ton of traffic and sold most of our leftover puppies after picking on here. Since they added the boosting option we don't get as much traffic but sell some puppies through here. AKC-Marketplace costs $45/listing, but if I have 2 litters of the same breed, I only list one. If we have quite a few litters planned for the year I can just do monthly for $12/month. Doggit-This one just takes a ton of time to list on. I have spent a ton of time and still haven't managed to list a litter yet. Good Dog-This one just takes a ton of time to list on. Each dog and litter takes hours to add. Puppies sold through Good Dog sell for $1650 to cover the costs of advertising through Good Dog.
Taxes: State Tax- We pay Illinois state tax on all of our puppy sales 6.25%+ Income Tax- The Government is going to take an additional 24-32% of the sales, pending which year we claim income versus loss.
Paperwork: Google drive costs $20/year. Printer and Ink-I have moved most of our paperwork onto the website now, but we still have to have a printer, copier, and scanner for FHF. Cost of ink and paper alone for 2024 was over $200. That doesn't take into account the printer costs since I was lucky enough to not buy one in 2024. Computer: My computers are used 99.9% for FHF and I go through laptops like they are water. Ave cost is about $1000-2000/yr for that computer alone. Fortunately, my desktop is hanging in there.
